Project Overview
The STEMLab acts as a new hub for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), providing a truly student-focused learning environment boasting state-of-the-art facilities. It offers a ‘drop-in’ engineering workshop, alongside a range of modern laboratories and teaching spaces. After planning submission, we were brought in to develop the designs and support the project through construction.
The project has a two-fold significance: firstly, the STEMLab facilities are fundamental to the university’s strategic expansion in STEM subjects; and secondly, the building sits in a prominent gateway location on campus.
Our refinements to the university’s original proposals included a new external appearance, introducing more ordered elevations, larger windows, and high parapets to conceal a roof-mounted plant. We also introduced a high-quality landscaping scheme which transformed the steeply sloping site into a pedestrian-friendly social space. Internally, our expertise has helped rationalise laboratory layouts and coordinate the significant building services and extract requirements.
