Project Overview
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service required a new Central Fire Station building, due to impending redevelopment of its existing site. The new station’s location on London Road sits on a major arterial route into Nottingham. This is strategically important to the fire service as it can provide a good response time to an emergency in the city centre, as well as support the wider fire response network.
The site is in Nottingham City Council’s ‘Southside Regeneration Zone’ an area currently undergoing significant change. In response to this, the proposed form and building fabric represents an attractive modern addition to the southside area, whilst maintaining use of the historical materials that prevail in the local context.
The building accommodates three fire engines plus all necessary support facilities including office space and the main emergency control facility for Nottingham. Sustainable features that were incorporated in the building include solar panels on the roof and a connection to the district heating system - together these features exceed the local authority requirement for 10% of the building’s energy demand to come from renewable sources.
