In the dynamic landscape of architecture and design, sustainability has emerged as a paramount concern.

At CPMG, we recognise the urgency of addressing carbon emissions not only in our building designs but also within our own operations. As proud signatories to the RIBA 2030 Challenge and the SME Climate Hub, we are committed to driving change from within, setting ambitious targets for carbon reduction and sustainability, and disclosing our progress each year.

In our journey towards sustainability, we understand that innovation extends beyond architectural concepts to encompass our business strategies. Our commitment to carbon reduction is deeply ingrained in our business improvement plan, which includes not only environmental goals but also cutting-edge IT, flexible working arrangements, and a modernized regional office network close to our customers and projects.

Our decision to relocate to St Peter’s Gate (BCO Award Winner 2022) in 2021 was not merely a change of address but a strategic move towards sustainability. By extensively consulting with our staff, using a Leesman Index survey, we ensured that our new office space promotes well-being and environmental consciousness. From welfare facilities to greenery integration and energy-efficient design, every aspect was meticulously crafted to align with our sustainability ethos.

Choosing a city centre location enhances accessibility and supports flexible working arrangements, reducing the need for extensive commuting. Our commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of our office, from repurposing the existing structure to implementing energy-efficient features and sourcing renewable energy through a green energy supplier.

Transparent measurement of our carbon emissions is central to our sustainability journey, and we thank Nottingham Trent University for their assistance in setting this up. Through rigorous tracking of Scope 1 (gas), Scope 2 (electricity), and Scope 3 (everything else) emissions, we have achieved a remarkable reduction of 49% since 2019, already nearing our 2030 Climate Hub target of 50%. Future initiatives, including the adoption of electric vehicles, rooftop solar arrays, and reducing home working, aim to further propel us towards our goal – we estimate this would lead to a 63% reduction against our baseline.

In line with our commitment to sustainability, our decarbonization projects stand as exemplars of our dedication to incorporating cutting-edge environmental practices into our design and business operations. Collaborating closely with esteemed institutions, we're applying insights gleaned from our own sustainability journey to win commissions that embody our ethos. For instance, our work with Loughborough University showcases how we integrate innovative design solutions, into educational spaces. By leveraging our expertise and partnerships, we're not only reducing our carbon footprint but also influencing positive change across the broader architectural landscape.

At CPMG, sustainability is not just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental part of who we are and what we stand for. Through innovation, collaboration, and unwavering commitment, we are leading the way towards a more sustainable future for the architecture industry. While we celebrate our achievements, we recognize that we still have a long way to go. As our London office grows, it’s imperative that it follows suit, aligning with our sustainability principles. Additionally, we must consider how we bring into scope our overseas offices.

Join us as we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible and pave the path towards a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.
