Work has been completed on the new Textiles and Fashion department building for the University of Derby. The conversion of a series of industrial units into a modern academic space has proven to be a stimulating project.
"Regenerating vacant old buildings and bringing them back into use always represents a distinct challenge," said Chris White, Project Director. "Our team has worked extremely hard along with the client to develop and implement the brief, whilst remaining acutely aware of the spatial needs for the working machinery and the creation of an academic environment conducive to learning."
The conversion included a small element of new build and the installation of a new mezzanine floor to the main workshop area. "Understanding the constraints of the existing can often stimulate innovative solutions to the design problems encountered. Chandos Pole is an example of that and represents a successful response to an exacting brief."
